Custom Wood Tap Handles for Breweries: Design, Materials & Process
Your tap handles are one of the first things customers see at the bar. Here is what goes into building custom wood tap handles that match your brand.

Quick answer: Custom wood tap handles cost $35 to $150 per handle. Lead time is 2 to 4 weeks. They fit standard 3/8"-16 ferrules. Popular woods include walnut, maple, and cherry. CNC-carved logos, wood inlays, and epoxy details are all options.
If you run a brewery, brewpub, or bar on Long Island (or anywhere else), your tap handles do real work. They sit at eye level, they carry your brand, and they are one of the few physical touchpoints between your company and your customers. A generic black plastic handle tells people nothing. A custom wood handle with your logo carved into walnut tells them you care about the details. We have built custom tap handles for several Long Island businesses, including Long Beach Brewing Company and West End Cafe Bar, and this guide covers everything you need to know about the process.
Why custom tap handles matter for your brand
Craft beer customers notice. They notice the tap list, but they also notice the tap handles. A row of custom wood handles behind the bar signals that you are a brewery that pays attention to quality across the board. That perception carries over to how people judge your beer. Fair or not, presentation matters.
Beyond aesthetics, branded tap handles serve a practical purpose. When your handles are in bars and restaurants across the area, they function as small advertisements. Each handle is a billboard for your brand, sitting right where buying decisions are made. When a customer at a busy bar scans the tap line, a distinctive handle catches their eye and prompts them to ask about your beer.
Wood species for tap handles
The wood you choose sets the tone for the handle. Here are the species we use most:
- Black walnut. Dark brown with purple undertones. The most popular choice for craft breweries. Walnut photographs well, holds fine CNC detail, and ages gracefully. It communicates quality without being flashy.
- Hard maple. Light, creamy white. Creates strong contrast when paired with a dark logo inlay or dark wood accents. Very hard, so it holds up well to bar-level wear and handling.
- Cherry. Warm reddish-brown that deepens with age. Good for brands with a traditional or craft-forward identity. Fine grain holds detail well.
- White oak. Golden honey tones with visible grain. Has a natural association with barrels and brewing, which makes it a fitting choice for a brewery tap handle.
- Two-tone combinations. A walnut handle with a maple inlay, or an oak handle with a cherry accent ring. Combining species creates visual interest and lets you match your brand colors more closely.
Design options
The design possibilities are wide. Here are the most common approaches we take:
- CNC-carved logo. Your logo is carved directly into the wood surface using a CNC router. The carved area can be left natural (darker shadow in the wood), filled with epoxy resin in your brand color, or filled with a contrasting wood species. This is the most popular option.
- Turned handles. Shaped on a lathe for a rounded, ergonomic profile. Can be tall and slender, short and stout, or anything in between. Good for breweries that want a classic, refined look.
- Flat-face handles. A rectangular or paddle-shaped handle with a flat front face for maximum logo display area. These give you the largest canvas for branding.
- Branded with accent rings. A turned handle with a ring of contrasting wood or metal at the top, middle, or base. Adds a design detail without requiring CNC work.
- Epoxy resin accents. Colored resin poured into carvings, cracks, or voids in the wood. Can match your brand colors exactly. We have done ocean blue for coastal breweries, amber for lager-focused brands, and black for stout series.
How we build custom tap handles
The process from first conversation to finished handles looks like this:
- Design consultation. You share your logo, brand guidelines, and any references for the look you want. We discuss wood species, shape, size, and branding details.
- Prototype. For first-time orders, we usually build a single prototype for approval. This lets you hold the handle, check the proportions, and confirm the logo looks right before we produce the full batch.
- Production. Once the prototype is approved, we build the full order. Each handle is milled, carved or turned, sanded through multiple grits, and finished with a durable topcoat that resists bar-level moisture and handling.
- Ferrule installation. Every handle gets a standard 3/8"-16 UNC brass ferrule installed in the base. This threads directly onto your existing beer faucet. No adapters needed.
- Delivery. We ship or deliver the finished handles. Long Island breweries can pick up from our shop in Babylon or we will drop them off.
Pricing and lead times
Custom tap handle pricing depends on complexity. A simple turned walnut handle with a small CNC-carved logo costs less than a multi-species flat-face handle with epoxy-filled carving and accent rings. Here is a general range:
| Handle Type | Per Handle (1-5) | Per Handle (10+) |
|---|---|---|
| Simple turned (no carving) | $35 - $50 | $25 - $40 |
| Turned with CNC logo | $50 - $80 | $40 - $65 |
| Flat-face with CNC logo | $60 - $100 | $50 - $80 |
| Multi-species with inlay/epoxy | $80 - $150 | $65 - $120 |
Lead time is typically 2 to 4 weeks from design approval. Larger orders (50+) may need additional time. If you have a taproom opening or event with a firm date, reach out at least 6 weeks ahead so we can schedule the build with buffer.
Our Long Island brewery work
We have built multiple batches of tap handles for Long Beach Brewing Company, one of Long Island's growing craft breweries. Their handles feature the brewery's round logo CNC-carved into walnut with a natural finish. We also built branded handles for West End Cafe Bar. Both are repeat clients, which tells you how the handles hold up in a real bar environment. You can see photos of these projects in our gallery.
